Whether or not you can own a pig as a pet in Alabama depends on where you live. That's because Alabama state law does not address domestic pig ownership. However, the city or county in which you reside may have its own rules regarding pig ownership. To determine whether pet pigs are legal in your city, check with your local Animal Control or animal ordinances. Meanwhile, I've put together a list of nine Alabama cities where it's legal to keep a pig as a household pet.

Gadsden, AL

You can own a pet pig if you reside in Gadsden, Alabama. The City's Animal Ordinance permits residents to keep registered purebred miniature Vietnamese potbellied pigs or other similar registered purebred miniature pigs as pets within the city limits. Per the city code, your mini pig must not weigh more than 125 pounds. Also, it must not be taller than 18 inches. You must have your pet spayed or neutered upon reaching maturity. In addition, your mini pig must undergo a blood test to show it is free from pseudorabies. You must keep your mini pig as a pet, not as a food source. Lastly, you may not own more than 2 mini pigs.

Daphne, AL

In Daphne, Alabama, pot-bellied pigs are considered "Domesticated animals," which may be kept as pets. Per Chapter 4 of the city's Code of Ordinances, it's unlawful to permit your pet pig to be at large at any time within the city. When found at large, your pet pig will be seized by a police officer who will confine the animal to the City of Daphne Animal Shelter. Within 7 days after your pet is impounded, you may redeem it by paying the city $25 for impounding and $4 per day for the care of the animal.
